Golf in South Zimbabwe

It should come as no real surprise that the name of Nick Price is connected with many of the finest courses in his homeland of Zimbabwe. The man who has done more to put Zimbabwe on the golfing map than anyone else over the years either designed himself or partly designed some of the best layouts in the country.

Royal Harare Golf Club, for instance, was re-designed by the former Open champion in 1997 and is highly regarded by all those who have played there.It has some of the most beautiful indigenous trees on any golf course in Africa, the tight fairways making it a fabulous test of golf. "The course is both challenging for the high handicap players as well as professionals and scratch players," says Price. "The two holes that I enjoy most are the par-4 tenth and the par-5 12th."

Also in Harare are the Chapman Golf Club and the Sun River Golf & Country Club. The former is situated just a few miles from the city centre and was re-designed by Price in 1995. The course, which has staged the Zimbabwe Open and many other top tournaments, winds its way around numerous streams and water hazards.

Within the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe there are a number of courses that twist and turn around boulders and water hazards, offering visiting golfers many challenges as well as stunning views.

Further south is the Bvumba, where one of the most exciting courses in the country is situated at Leopard Rock Hotel. This is a beautiful area of the country and several water hazards make the Leopard Rock course an interesting test to say the least.

Elephant Hills was designed by South African golfing legend Gary Player and is a parkland course which lies within earshot of the majestic Victoria Falls. Here elephants, buffalo and warthogs wander alongside the course behind a game fence!
