Golf in Charleston

Around 90 miles down the Carolina coast from the famous Myrtle Beach Resort is Charleston, one of America’s historic treasures. Charleston was founded in 1670 and at nearly every turn along narrow cobblestone streets you get a sense of America’s past and its British influence.

It also has a rich history in golf. The first golf course in America, Harleston Green, was established as a nine-hole course in the 1700s but is not in existence today. It is also thought that the first golf clubs brought to the ‘New World’ were actually imported through Charleston Harbour.

But perhaps the piece of Charleston golf history more vividly etched in the memory if the golf world today is the 1991 Ryder Cup contest - the War on the Shore - held at nearby Kiawah Island.

Today travellers to the region can still enjoy and relive the matches at the Ocean Course of Kiawah Island Golf Resort. But what many may not realise is that the former Ryder Cup venue is much more than a famed golf course.

Kiawah Island is a thoroughly developed barrier island with more than ten miles of uninterrupted white sandy beaches and boasts an award-winning inn and luxury villa accommodation.
And there is not just one golf course, there are five championship courses designed by the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Fazio.

Only one mile from there is yet another classic resort of the American South, the exclusive Seabrook Island. Here you can discover an unhurried and uncrowded atmosphere on your own private barrier island which blends the beauty and tranquillity of the sea islands with the amenities and services provided by a premier resort community.

Charleston, then, does not allow its golf courses to take a back seat when welcoming visitors and any respected tour operator will tell you just that.
