Golf in Texas

Many Texans have made their mark in golf. The great state of Texas has produced the likes of Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite and Justin Leonard, almost like a who’s who in the world of professional golf.

The sheer size of the state (it is twice the size of the United Kingdom) gives rise to a plethora of golf courses of varying styles, shapes and sizes.

Texas is used to the plaudits, and superlatives are very much par for the course when it comes to reviewing its golf courses. There aren’t too many places in the world that can lay claim to that kind of respect and attention.

Texas encompasses San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston. It is bordered to the south by New Mexico, to the north by Oklahoma and to the east by Louisiana.

It’s most famous golf course is Champions, in Houston, the work of Jimmy Damaret, the first player to win the Master three times, and Jackie Burke. In the past it has played host to the Ryder Cup (1967) and the US Open (1969) while in more recent times it has hosted the season-ending US PGA Tour event, the Tour Championship.

Teravista Golf Club in Round Rock is one of the best new courses in the state and provides for an exhilarating day’s golf. Barton Creek, the work of Tom Fazio, is another that deserves attention, as should the TPC at Las Colinas and the Pine Dunes Resort.

Arnold palmer’s new course at the Westin La Cantera Resort completes what is a stunning resort for golf and is another that should be on your itinerary.

You will find it increasingly difficult to pick and choose exactly what courses you wish to pay most attention to, that’s why we recommend organising your trip through a tour operator.
