Golf in Rome

Rome is the capital city of Italy, as well as being the regional capital of Lazio, and is located on the river Tiber. It is Italy's largest city and has an incredible number of 'must see' places, including St Peter's, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and the market at Campo de' Fiori. It is, without doubt, one of the great cities of the world.

Rome also has an array of beautiful golf courses that for the best part of the year tend to enjoy a strange serenity, as most people who come to Rome tend to spend their time taking in all the typical tourist spots.

The Rome golf course is perhaps the leading course in the area, although it remains a private members course with selected available tee times for any visitors. It is set amongst rolling hills and tall pines and is reasonably hilly in parts. It encompasses a certain links-like feel, as you play through the bumps and hollows and back and forth over the ever present brook. The only way to acquire a tee time on this course is to book through a tour operator.

Roma-Acquasanta, Parco De' Medici and Fiuggi golf clubs are within a short drive from the outskirts of the city and remain very popular with travelling golfers. Castelgandolfo is a wonderful course and the work of Robert Trent Jones. It has previously been described as a masterpiece and for good reason. It is set in the bowl of an extinct volcano and enjoys perhaps the best setting of any Italian course.

Eucalyptus is a great course, though not in the same vein as the above two but very much worthy of a mention. Tee times are available here throughout the year and many who visit Rome tend to take up the challenge.
