The Algarve is considered one of Europe's most popular golfing destinations and every year its sunny delights entice even more golfers to come and see just why it's the talking point of traveling goflers across Europe.

Its climate may not be as hot through the winter months but temperatures will definitely hit the 20s, which is perfect for golfers. Twenty-six superb courses to choose from and ideal weather make this golfing retreat a guaranteed success.

Without doubt, the Algarve is the most popular region for those who travel to Portugal with clubs in tow. Its spectacular coastline is blessed with a number of golf courses, allowing you to select a different challenge each day.

The fairways are exposed to the sun and the cool Atlantic breeze, although you may well need a jacket or pullover in the evenings as it can get a little chilly. It's that kind of experience that makes this place so popular.

With purpose built resorts like Vilamoura, which now has five courses in its radius, to the exclusive Quinta do Lago Estate, home to four championship-standard courses, the Algarve serves up a veritable feast of golf and a feast that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

From Islantilla, which is just over the border in Spain, through to Penina in the West, your every need is catered for. You can reside in luxury five-star accommodation or enjoy a little more freedom in a self-catering apartment. Ideally, you should pre-book with a specialist tour operator in order to get the best out of your trip. These operators can advise on the best courses to play, including those that suit your price range, and the best places to stay. Also, you needn't have to worry about booking tee times as many operators have pre-booked times that are available solely to your party.

There are over 20 golf courses to choose from and they can range from holiday nine-holers to mammoth championship standard layouts. Some of the hotels have their own courses like the Le Meridien Dona Filipa, which is home of the world famous San Lorenzo course, rated number two in mainland Europe behind Valderama, home of the 1997 Ryder Cup.

Le Meridien Penina also has its own championship course as well as two other academy courses, perfect for working on your game whilst soaking up the sunshine.

There are some real delights when it comes to the Algarve's golf courses. One of the oldest in the region is the Palmares. Consistently in good condition, this mix of parkland and links- with five holes on the beach - is always recommended.

There are also a number of nine-hole courses to suit beginners or the holiday golfer who is out for a bit of fun in the sun. The Penina Resort and Penina Academy are two such examples.

Being home to vast, unspoiled beaches and fascinating, ancient towns, taking a day off from the golf is well worth it. Eating out is a delight in the Algarve, with many traditional restaurants serving local fish and international dishes. There are many local wines to choose from and, generally, your evening's entertainment comes at a very reasonable price.
