Golf in Mallorca

It is estimated that almost 40% of all tourists who go on holiday to Spain each year go to Mallorca. That means the beautiful, sun-kissed island attracts some eight million visitors per year!

Of that number, you can bet your bottom dollar that a fair percentage go there with one thing firmly in mind – playing golf.

Luckily for them, Mallorca is not short on golfing tracts with over 20 terrific courses to choose from all over the island.

The oldest of these is Son Vida, which was designed by the esteemed golf course architect Fred Hawtree and opened by Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1964. In the 40 years since, it has become the most prestigious golf course on the island and one of the most desirable places in Spain to own property such is the luxury it affords.

At the other end of the age scale is the Andratx course at Camp de Mar Golf Club. This is Mallorca's newest course and was opened in 2000. It is quite magnificently laid out, and Scottish golfers might be interested to know that its design is credited to the Gleneagles Golf Development and Rodney Barr.

Santa Ponsa is one of the island’s championship courses and was the host venue for the Balearic Open when it appeared on the European Tour schedule between 1998 and 1998. Local hero Seve Ballesteros won the title twice in that period, so you’ll be following in illustrious footsteps if you play this course.
Poniente, meantime, is another of Mallorca’s oldest golf course. It opened in 1978 based upon designs by Fred Harris. He successfully managed to weave a challenging course into a quite exhilarating setting and, even more appealingly, it is located within easy reach of the bustling, thriving tourist hot-spot of Magaluf.
Elsewhere, Real Golf de Bendinat is a challenging Martin Hawtree design which opened as a nine-hole course in 1986 before being extended to a full 18 holes by its tenth birthday.

Other courses worthy of note in Mallorca include Son Atem, Vall D’Or, Son Servera and Canyamel, the latter offering some of the most incredible views of the Mediterranean you are likely to enjoy on the island.

Truth be told, however, no matter where you decide to tee it up in Mallorca, you’ll have a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience.
